Atopic Dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis, also called eczema, is an inflammatory reaction of the skin. It is the “itch that rashes”. Most eczema begins in infants and young children and tends to improve with time and most resolve by seven years of age. Eczema can occur anywhere on the body but usually on the face, scalp, abdomen and arms of infants. As the child becomes older, the rash is usually localized to the bends of the elbows, wrists, behind the knee and ankles. Atopic dermatitis usually appears as a reddish brown bumpy rough rash with some whitish areas on top in severe cases. Most lesions are usually itchy which leads to worsening of the rash. Atopic dermatitis typically is a presentation of allergy with 90% due to indoor or outdoor allergies and 10% due to foods. Evaluation by an allergist will help identify your triggers and recommend appropriate treatment.
